Marcos Rojo, a former Manchester United defender has suffered a serious knee injury while playing for Boca Juniors in Argentina.

Rojo who left United in February of this year, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during. Boca’s 1-0 Primera Division win over Sarmiento on Wednesday.

Boca said Rojo, 32, will have knee surgery on Monday and will most likely be out for several months.

He was injured just a few minutes after Sarmiento goalkeeper Sebastian Meza saved a penalty.

It was a minor incident, with Rojo reaching for the ball under no duress and appearing to get his studs caught in the turf.

As Sarmiento forward Luciano Gondou stepped over Boca’s No. 6, he crumpled to the ground and signaled to the bench while holding his knee.

Following initial treatment, Rojo appeared close to tears as he took his place on the subs bench, with heavy strapping around the joint.

He had to be consoled by teammates as Luca Langoni’s goal on the stroke of half-time kept Boca ahead of Atletico Tucuman in the standings.

‘I feel sad, everything indicates it is the ligament,’ Rojo said after the game, according to the club’s website. I have to do the scans tomorrow; let’s hope it’s nothing.’

Boca later confirmed that his worst fears had come true.

Rojo had only recently returned to the Boca team after receiving an unusual punishment from the Argentine FA for kicking River Plate’s Nicolas de la Cruz in the head during last month’s Superclasico.

He received a one-match suspension for the resulting red card and was then barred from captaining Boca for a month.

It’s not the first time Rojo, who has 61 appearances under his belt, has suffered a cruciate ligament injury.

He needed seven months to recover after suffering a similar injury while playing for United against Anderlecht in the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals in April 2017.

Rojo didn’t return to action until the end of November, missing United’s championship victory.

After falling out of favor at Old Trafford, he was loaned out to Estudiantes in Argentina in January 2020 before joining Boca just over a year later.
