After suffering an injury while on international duty, Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo may have to undergo surgery.

The international break turned out to be a nightmare for the Catalan club, with injuries to Frenkie de Jong, Memphis Depay, Jules Kounde, and Ronald Araujo.

Kounde, who joined the club from Sevilla during the summer transfer window, will be out for four to five weeks. He had a minor muscle tear.

The injury to Araujo was initially thought to be minor. In the first minute of Uruguay’s 1-0 loss to Iran, the defender was replaced. He was expected to be out of commission for two to three weeks. However, after further examination, it was determined that the defender would need six to seven weeks to recover, and the Catalan club is considering surgery for the player.

Both Kounde and Araujo will miss a number of crucial Barcelona matches, including the El Clasico. Andreas Christensen, Eric Garcia, and Gerard Pique will now be expected to carry out Barcelona’s defensive duties.

Xavi Hernandez’s men have been outstanding defensively in La Liga, conceding only one goal in six games.

Kounde, 23, has made five appearances for the club this season, providing three assists. Meanwhile, Araujo has appeared in seven games for the Blaugarana this season.

Sergio Busquets has been a Barcelona legend since making his debut in 2008. To date, the player has made 687 appearances for the Catalan club.

He is, however, 34 years old and in the final year of his contract. Despite his age, he is still a starter and the club captain under Xavi Hernandez.

According to ESPN, Busquets could join David Beckham’s MLS club Inter Miami. The Spanish World Cup champion responded to the rumors, saying (via Barca Blaugaranaus):

“Everything in the media has seemed strange to me because there is nothing.” I haven’t considered it because I want to see how the season unfolds. I have several options, including staying with my club or playing in other leagues.”

“It is obvious that I am not 20 years old, but in the end, it is the last year of the contract that I signed. I understand that there are rumors, but they are false, and nothing is official until it becomes official.”
