Chelsea poised to name new sporting director

Christoph Freund is anticipated to be named Chelsea’s sporting director.
The administrator of Red Bull Salzburg is understood to have verbally agreed to take over the job that new co-controlling owner Todd Boehly has filled on an interim basis this summer.
Freund’s shrewdness, innovative ideas, and zeal are said to have pleased Blues owners Boehly and Behdad Eghbali.

Before owners Boehly and Eghbali moved ahead with a deal, new Chelsea manager Graham Potter was said to have been approached for his thoughts on Freund.
Potter is believed to be eager to work with Freund, with Kyle Macaulay, the incoming Chelsea coach’s backroom staff recruitment specialist, also highly involved.
Freund has formed strong bonds with several of the RB Salzburg players, and Chelsea’s new owners are understood to view that emotional connection as complementary to Potter’s coaching style.
The Blues could still hire a technical director to work alongside Freund, and Monaco’s Paul Mitchell is a long-term objective.
The speed with which Boehly and Eghbali are overhauling the club’s off-field structure is said to inspire Chelsea’s players.
The Blues players understand Potter needs as much time on the pitch as possible to create his Stamford Bridge blueprint, and they feel Freund’s impending appointment will allow the ex-Brighton manager to hone tactics and squad set-up.

Co-owner Boehly will also be able to devote more time to his role as chairman of Chelsea.
US businessmen Boehly and Eghbali want a defined structure for their Chelsea renovation, with all partners working in tandem through regular, open discussion.

Boehly and Eghbali believed their vision was no longer in sync with Tuchel’s, who had led the Blues to the 2021 Champions League and 2022 Club World Cup titles.
Potter was appointed as Tuchel’s replacement on September 8 in a swift move by Blues management.
On Wednesday, Chelsea’s new coach oversaw a 1-1 Champions League draw with Freund’s Salzburg at Stamford Bridge.
