Fernandes regularly led the team during the last campaign, featuring in all but one of the team’s Premier League fixtures as they finished third to return to the Champions League for the first time since 2021.
As expected, the influential Portuguese midfielder has been appointed as the full-time replacement for Harry Maguire, who was stripped of the armband last week after three-and-a-half years following talks with manager Erik ten Hag.
Fernandes is certainly no stranger to captaining United, having stepped up to lead the team on many occasions last season with Maguire struggling for regular starts.
“Bruno Fernandes has been named as the new club captain of Manchester United,” the club announced on Thursday after embarking on their pre-season trip to the United States, where they face Arsenal, Wrexham, Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.
