OFFICIAL: Manchester United announces the £85.4m transfer of Antony

Following his £85.5 million departure from Ajax, Manchester United presented Antony, their second-most expensive acquisition in the club’s history.

The Brazilian forward has committed to Old Trafford through the end of 2027, with an additional year’s option.

“Joining one of the most illustrious clubs in the world is a wonderful time in my career,” he remarked.

I’m grateful to everyone who supported me, especially my family, as well as to my coaches and team members, without whom I would not have succeeded.

Erik ten Hag’s coaching at Ajax was ideal for me and my progress.

“His coaching and playing style bring out the best in me, and I am inspired by what he has shared with me about his goals and intentions for Manchester,” the player said.

“My time at Ajax was amazing, and I will always be grateful for the trust they placed in me. However, now that I am ready for the next challenge, I can’t wait to join my new team-mates and contribute to the success of Manchester United,” the player said.

In 82 games, he scored 24 goals and provided 22 assists for Ajax, who won the last two Dutch league championships as well as the 2021 Dutch Cup under Ten Hag’s leadership.

“Antony is one of the most exciting young players in European football and has exactly the perfect profile for the aggressive, dynamic team Erik is constructing,” continued John Murtough, United’s Director of Football.

“We have been particularly struck by his enthusiasm to join Manchester United and to be a part of a long-term effort to restore the club back to the heights of performance we all demand,” the statement continued.

United made a bid of £81.3 million as a set sum plus £4.2 million in add-ons, which includes a donation in support of Antony’s former team, Sao Paulo.

Erik ten Hag, the manager of United, eventually got his man as Ajax held out for more money after rejecting a £76 million offer last Friday.

In addition to refusing to exercise with his teammates, Antony had urged Ajax hard to let him go. He was not included in their Sunday 2-0 victory over Utrecht.

Although the United manager may use him as a quick center forward or on the left flank, Ten Hag will likely replace Anthony Elanga in the team’s current preferred starting lineup.
