OFFICIAL : Xavi breaks Zidane’s La Liga record
Barcelona won a narrow away victory against Real Mallorca on Saturday night, setting a personal best for Xavi Hernandez.
Even though it wasn’t a stellar performance, the Blaugrana will be happy just to leave the island with three points. The only blemish seemed to be Gavi’s potential muscle problem.
Barcelona won its 18th consecutive game away from home in La Liga. Since Xavi’s arrival at the club last November, his team has not been defeated away from home.
It is the longest unbeaten run for a manager away from home in Spanish football history. Zinedine Zidane had previously held the record.
During his press conference, Xavi seemed unconcerned about the record. His words were carried by Mundo Deportivo.
“Records are useless unless they are accompanied by titles.” It means we’re on the right track, but we’re also at home. The records taste better if they are translated into titles, but for the time being they are anecdotal.”
That record will be put to the test in the coming weeks, as Barcelona travels to Real Madrid before hosting Valencia at Mestalla at the end of October.
It is the longest unbeaten streak by a manager away from home, setting a new record for Spanish football. Furthermore, it is the longest unbeaten streak in Spanish football history. Someone else held the record before Zinedine Zidane. That person was Zinedine Zidane.
